Gail has been awarded this annual 3-week residency to research conceptual constructs and develop performative strategies around live text generation that is integrated into an audio-visual performance mode. She is interested in the compulsion and the struggle to communicate using words—what words can and can’t do—and will explore both aural and visual text, as well as live and AI cloned voice. See sound/s/words blog for updates.

Here Now Hear explores the way in which sound positions us in place and presentness. Using sounds gathered from the surrounding city streets and the building itself, I will create sonic and visual representations of site and moment comprising soundscapes and wall pieces based on the audio tool of spectral analysis.

Gail will be working with students to devise a performance for the pavilion and surrounding park which will use digital devices (phone, laptops and homemade technology) to create an “e-Orchestra”.
The composition will be inspired by the site and research into the history of bandstands as places of social cohesion and leisure. It could be argued that we are at a comparable crisis point in the early 21st century, as our mobile digital devices encourage insulation, isolation, and interior lifestyles. This performance uses the same technology to bring people back together, in public space.
